Answer with a workflow
Question: How would you work a denial?
Strong structure: I would first read the remittance and adjustment information, confirm the affected claim line and root cause, review the account and payer policy, determine whether the correct action is a correction, documentation submission or appeal, document the action, and set the next follow-up date. I would escalate coding or clinical questions rather than changing them myself without authority.
Use STAR for behavioral questions
Situation: brief context. Task: what you were responsible for. Action: what you specifically did. Result: measurable or observable outcome.
When you do not know
A safe answer is better than invented certainty: explain which source you would check - payer portal, coding resource, supervisor, compliance team, provider documentation or internal policy - and why.
Quick knowledge check
Is saying “I would verify the payer policy” a weak answer?
No. When paired with a clear workflow, it shows safe and realistic billing judgment.
What should you avoid in interviews?
Claiming universal rules where payer, plan, code year or specialty can change the answer.
