Module 12 · Medical Billing Job Readiness & Practical Case Simulation
Lesson 3 of 5

Denial & A/R Workqueue Simulation

Real billing work rarely arrives one account at a time. Billers usually manage queues. The skill is deciding which account needs attention first and what action will actually move it toward resolution.

A practical priority model

  1. Deadline risk: filing, reconsideration or appeal deadline approaching.
  2. Actionable status: required information or correction is available now.
  3. Aging: older balances need structured escalation.
  4. Financial impact: use balance and volume after deadline/actionability risk.
  5. Next-action date: do not repeatedly touch claims before the expected response window.

Example queue

AccountStatusRiskBest next action
ADenial; appeal due soonHigh deadline riskReview documentation and submit/escalate appeal now
BClaim submitted 3 days agoLowWait for normal adjudication window
C90-day A/R; payer requested recordsHigh aging/actionableSend required records and document reference
DLarge balance, payer processingMonitorFollow on payer-stated completion date

Avoid unproductive touches

A status check without a purpose can increase work without improving cash. Each touch should answer a question, satisfy a requirement, escalate a delay or move the account to the next responsible party.

Quick knowledge check

Which usually comes first: a deadline-at-risk appeal or a newer large balance still processing normally?

The deadline-at-risk appeal.

Why set a next-action date?

It prevents unnecessary repeat work and ensures the account returns to the queue when action is useful.
